Caldwell county: Dr Lloyd Murdock - UK Extension Professor - 6/27/12

Pictures of corn in severe drought conditions. It was planted April 3 and has had 4.36 inches of rain since planted. The picture was taken on June 27. The soil is a fragipan soil that is about 22 inches deep to the fragipan the will not allow root development below 22 inches. The profile to the pan is completely dry. The tank is empty. The corn has tasseled and silked but not much fertilization took place. The few grains of corn that were fertilized will not develop if the 10 day forcast is true. It will be a complete failure.

Oldham county: Traci Missun - Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources 6/29/12

Fortunately, Oldham County has been blessed up until the last few weeks with better rainfall than most. One of our farmers on the south side of the county has a weather station and the year to date rainfall there is 21.29” http://www.weatherlink.com/user/kevinjeff/. Our crops are generally not showing drought stress symptoms yet but I expect they will soon. I talked to a market vegetable producer early this week and he was setting up to irrigate from a cistern.

Within the last week, lawn grasses have really started to show the impact of dry weather, especially on slopes, where soil is shallower, and where facing the intense afternoon sun with no shade. We are beginning to see some browning and crunchy grass in lawns. Pastures that were in decent shape in the spring and not overgrazed are still holding up, but I expect that to change if we don’t get rain soon.

I sincerely hope I don’t have any drought-stressed crop photos to send you this year. We have a 30% rain chance on Sunday so I plan to go outside and start my rain dance early that morning!

Nelson Co. 07/05/2012 - Rick Greenwell

The Nelson county extension agent sent this to me today. Nelson county is in central Kentucky... Tom, "Here is what’s going on drought wise in our County. Our early corn crop is a total loss, our 2nd crop beans are not germinating. We didn’t have a full cutting of Spring hay and some people are already feeding hay. Those who can are irrigating tobacco but the question is, do they irrigate now and haul stock water later. "
