There are several networks of weather stations collecting weather
data in Kentucky and across the Nation. Most, but not all, are
maintained by the National Weather Service (NWS) and archived by the
National Climate Data Center (NCDC). Most of these data are
avialable in the Ag. Weather Center...a considerable amount is
avialable online. But not all! The College does not gurantee
the quality or quantity of weather/climate data on this Web site AND
user's should contact the NCDC (704-271-4800) if data are needed
for legal purposes.

The Ag. Weather Stations are located in the rural areas of the
state and are provided daily electronically over the National
Weather Wire Service (NWWS) which feeds the College of Agriculture's
weather computers. The Ag. Weather Stations provide weather
observations based on the 24-hour period from 7 PM to 7 PM and
include max/min temperature, daily rainfall, max/min relative
humidity, soil temperature four inches under a grass cover and
in some cases...pan evaporation.
The Cooperative Climate Stations were established over 100 years
ago and have changed very little since then. They were
established to "provide a climatological database" for the entire
U.S. and are a part of and meet specifications for the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO). These stations collect max/min
temperature, daily rainfall/snowfall, and snowdepth. The
NWS try's to maintain one cooperative climate station in each
county in Kentucky and the U.S. Observers are generally
voluntary but some are paid a very small sum to cover cost
of phone calls/transportation cost to defray travel to make
observations. NWS maintains these stations but does not collect
or archive the data. Observers send their data to the NCDC at
the end of each month on tabular forms (paper). The data from
these climate stations are based on the 24-hour period...but not
necessarily in the evening like the Ag. Weather Stations..in fact,
many are from 7 AM to 7 AM...which is the national trend. It takes
NCDC about 3 to 5 months to enter all of this data into database,
quality control the data, and publish the data in hardcopy
form. (As of this date (10/16/97) I've just received March
1997 Cooperative Climate Station for Kentucky...which is seven
month past.

The NWS/FAA Weather Office weather stations not only provide daily
data but also a wealth of hourly data to NCDC but also in near
real-time of the NWWS Weather Wire.
Several other organizations collect weather/climate data. The
Corps of Engineers, private companies, many utility companies
are just some organizations, too name a few. Much of these
data are NOT made available to NCDC because the data does not
meet NWS (or WMO) data collection specifications.
The Ag. Weather Center archives the Ag. Weather Stations and
the First-Order NWS Weather Office data. Daily data is
available back to 1978. Hourly data is online back to 1993.
By request, daily data is available back to 1948 and hourly
data is available back to 1960.
