Across Kansas...temperatures are near 26 degrees west, near 34 degrees central, and near 39 degrees east. Current sky conditions are partly cloudy west, clear central, and clear east. In the west, relative humidity is near 84%, and the dew point is near 22 degrees. In the central part of the state, relative humidity is near 92%, and the dew point is near 32 degrees. In the east, relative humidity is near 70%, and the dew point is near 30 degrees. Winds are from the northwest at 7 mph west, where conditions are favorable for spraying. Winds are from the southwest at 7 mph central, where conditions are favorable for spraying. Winds are from the southwest at 12 mph east, where conditions are favorable for spraying. The wind chill is near 32 degrees east. Based on current available observations, the highest temperature is 40 degrees at Hill City. The lowest temperature is 26 degrees at Goodland.

 DAY ONE  Today and Tonight

Very high grassland fire danger is expected this afternoon across
central Kansas and the Flint Hills. 

 DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN  Friday through Wednesday

Very high grassland fire danger is expected across the Flint Hills
and south central Kansas on Friday afternoon and a portion of
central Kansas to the east of a Salina to Lyons line. 

Chances for thunderstorms will develop across the area from Sunday
night through Monday and Monday night. A few strong to severe storms
will be possible, mainly along and east of the Kansas turnpike, on 
Monday. Check later forecasts and outlooks as the details on the
potential for severe storms may change over the coming days.

HISTORIC WEATHER EVENTS

Thane Creek AK reported a snow cover of 190 inches. (The Weather Channel)

The worst tornado disaster of record occurred in Chicago IL as a tornado
killed 28 persons and caused three million dollars damage. (David Ludlum)
...1997...
Ten tornadoes tore across the area, affecting the Kentucky counties of 
Adair, Metcalfe, Casey, Green, Larue, Marion, Hardin, Hart, Nelson, and 
Russell; and the Indiana counties of Scott and Jefferson. Two of the 
twisters produced F3 damage. A 28-year-old woman was killed in Metcalfe 
County as she was thrown from her destroyed mobile home. A 40-year-old man 
was killed when his house in Bonnieville (Hart County) was hit by one of 
the F3 tornadoes and blown off its foundation. This tornado injured many 
people when it caused several car accidents as it crossed Interstate 65.
