Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
353 AM CDT Wed Apr 17 2024

Today:

Rain showers continue to linger early this morning over portions of
northern into central Iowa with a few thunderstorms also remaining
near the Iowa/Illinois/Wisconsin border. Temperatures as of 330 AM
ranged from the mid 40s far northwest Iowa to the mid 60s in far
southeast Iowa. Winds out of the west to northwest in west to central
Iowa and out of the south to southwest over eastern Iowa remain gusty
early this morning with gusts up to 40 mph.

Any lingering rain showers east to northeast will gradually come to an
end this morning into midday but cloud cover will linger through the
morning hours before gradual clearing occurs west to east this
afternoon. Any clearing will be fairly brief, however, with
additional cloud cover moving in tonight. High temperatures today will
mainly be in the 60s, a few spots south look to climb into the low
70s. The breezy to gusty winds will remain through a good portion of
the day before decreasing southwest to northeast later this afternoon
into tonight.

Tonight and beyond:

As mentioned above, cloud cover increases again tonight with winds
also picking up again in the southwest during the early morning hours
Thursday. Rain showers and a few thunderstorms will also return to the
forecast late tonight through the day Thursday. Thunderstorm chances
are highest over southern Iowa during the overnight to early morning
hours Thursday with rain showers expected further north in central to
northern Iowa. A few stronger storms could have some small hail or
gusty winds southwest to south late tonight into the early overnight
hours Thursday, but the chances for severe weather in Iowa are low
tonight. Cooler temperatures are expected Thursday into this weekend
with highs generally in the 50s and lows falling into the upper 20s to
30s Friday through Sunday mornings. This may introduce some
frost/freeze concerns for any sensitive plants.
