Weather Center Re: Kentucky Mesonet Task Force (KMTF) Date: May 11, 2000 The first meeting of the KMTF will be held at the Boone Center, Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Frankfort KY on May 31, 2000 starting at 1:00 pm EDT. The purpose of the Task Force is to explore all aspects of building and maintaining a high-density, real-time, research-quality network of weather stations in Kentucky (one per county) for the benefit of Kentucky residents. Toward that goal, the Task Force will determine the following items: - Identify all "Mesonet-compatible" weather stations currently existing in Kentucky, the agency that maintains each network, determine if Internet access is or will be available for real-time and archived data in these networks in Kentucky. If not available, determine the cost to make data available. - Discuss opportunities/costs of adding additional weather sensors to existing networks. - Create an Internet web site that provides links/info to all weather networks in Kentucky. - Create subcommittee(s) concerning new weather stations, communications, costs, other logistics. - Cooperate with U.K. in developing a proposal to establish the network of weather stations. Dr. Ken Crawford, Director of the Oklahoma Mesonet, will give a presentation concerning aspects of planning and maintaining the Mesonet in Oklahoma. As a likely stakeholder in the network, your agency is invited to attend this initial Task Force meeting and be a part of the planning process. A Web site has been created concerning the Kentucky Mesonet Task Force which has links to articles about other Mesonets in the U.S., a directory of names of potential Task Force members and other information.
